The Clean Planet Foundation's first chapter book, Ellie Ment and the Material Matter, has won the top honour at the Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards — the oldest and most recognised national awards platform in America devoted entirely to children’s literature.

The Clean Planet Foundation today announced that Ellie Ment and the Material Matter has received the top honour at the 2025 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards. The Moonbeam Awards celebrate outstanding storytelling for young readers across picture books, middle grade and young adult.
“Ellie Ment was written to make science feel adventurous, funny and completely accessible — and to help fund real environmental education,” said Bertie Stephens, author and CEO of Clean Planet Foundation. “This recognition is a huge boost for our mission to spark curiosity in classrooms and families.”

Set in a fast-paced, STEM-rich world, Ellie Ment and the Material Matter blends real science with high-stakes adventure, and has been adopted by schools and clubs across the UK and US since its June 2025 launch.
“We’re delighted to recognise Ellie Ment and the Material Matter with our top honour — a standout example of imaginative, high-quality children’s literature that inspires young readers.” — Moonbeam Children's Book Awards Director, Emily Slater
The Clean Planet Foundation celebrated this award on the same weekend at the Traverse Children’s Book Festival distributing copies to young people across Michigan.

The publisher of Ellie Ment and the Material Matter is the Clean Planet Foundation, a not-for-profit publisher and education charity that creates stories and programmes to inspire environmental understanding and scientific curiosity in young people.
Proceeds from Ellie Ment and the Material Matter help fund classroom resources, teacher training and community projects.
